The world’s most powerful drug company has been fined US$1.7bn for selling counterfeit versions of Celebrex and Vioxx.
The US Food and Drug Administration said it has fined the drug giant Pfizer US$1.5bn for the sale of counterfeit versions of the arthritis drug Celebrex, after it received a report of a US customs agent’s suspicion of smuggling.
The FDA said the counterfeit drugs were being sold to consumers from Britain and Australia at over-the-counter prices.
Pfizer was among the world’s top three drug firms, with US$7.5bn being handed in for selling their counterfeit versions of the arthritis drug Celebrex in the US last year.
Pfizer, the world’s biggest pharmaceutical company, which has sold more than 1,000 fake versions of the arthritis drug, has been given a 6 per cent fine by the FDA, which it said was “a fine of £1.7bn”.
The company is accused of marketing it as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, which affects millions of people, and osteoarthritis, a chronic arthritis disease caused by a lack of natural substances in the joints.
It was also given a 6 per cent fine by the FDA, which said it was a “serious breach of the law” and had to pay the company £1.7bn for sales.
In June, it said the company had been ordered by a customs agent to stop selling counterfeit versions of Vioxx.
Pfizer, which is based in Switzerland, said it had received a report of a customs agent’s suspicion of importing counterfeit versions of the arthritis drug, which is used to treat osteoarthritis.
The FDA said Pfizer, based in London, had received the report after it found counterfeit versions of Celebrex, and had received £1.5bn worth of it.
“Pfizer is clearly involved in this case,” said Mr David Cameron, spokesman for the Department of Health.
He said the company was aware of the counterfeit versions of Vioxx but had not contacted Pfizer.
The FDA said the company’s investigation found that it had been receiving reports of counterfeit drugs in Britain and Australia from Britain-based pharmaceutical firm Reckitt Benckiser.
Last year, Reckitt Benckiser had received a report of counterfeit Vioxx in the US and received another from a US customs agency.
Pfizer said it had been working with the US Food and Drug Administration to investigate the case but that the agency was not making any progress.
Pfizer’s director of international operations, Jonathan Hunt, told the BBC it was “not pursuing any further action” against the fake products.
“We have worked closely with the FDA and it is clear that our investigation is ongoing,” Mr Hunt said.
“We will continue to investigate and will update our website to reflect any further information.”
The company has been criticised by some consumers for selling fake versions of Vioxx, which has been linked to the deaths of at least two people.
Dr David Edwards, a Professor of Medicine at the University of Manchester, said: “It is an alarming development that has been driven by an unsuspecting consumer culture.”
He added that it was “very concerning” that Pfizer, which has spent “almost £1.7bn” selling counterfeit versions of the arthritis drug, had been caught selling the drugs to consumers in the US.
Pfizer has been branded as a “pharmaceutical company”.
Pfizer said it sold 1,000 fake versions of Vioxx last year, which it said had been sold to the public.
In July, it said it had received a report of a customs agent’s suspicion of smuggling.
The US authorities said the report, which was produced in cooperation with the US Customs Service, involved “a combination of counterfeit and pirated medications, from around the world”.
Pfizer said it was cooperating with the investigation.
